How do you turn ideas into impact and not just talk about it, but actually deliver? In this interview, BluMango founder Daria Mavrenkova shares the real story behind one of Belgium’s boldest, no-nonsense marketing agencies. From building brands with substance to helping clients cut through the noise, she breaks down what makes BluMango different and why strategy always comes first.

You’ll get a clear view of how BluMango works: focused, honest, and built for results. No buzzwords, no filler. Just clarity, direction, and real outcomes. And yes—there’s also a cat named Mango at the heart of it all.

What inspired you to start BluMango?

After years in marketing, I realised I no longer wanted to work under someone else’s vision. I needed to build something of my own, where I could be fully responsible for the quality, direction, and outcome. I was tired of fitting into frameworks that didn’t match my standards. BluMango became my way to do work that I actually believe in, with clients I genuinely respect.

What was your vision when you launched BluMango?

I didn’t have a five-year plan, and I didn’t write a traditional business plan either. I didn’t want to start my business following a business-for-dummies guide. I didn’t waste time guessing what I should offer. I said: this is what I’m good at. Now let’s see what the market actually needs. I listened, I observed, and I adapted fast. I didn’t pretend to have it all figured out. I tested, adjusted, and built services based on real demand and not on a PowerPoint deck. First, find out what your potential customers actually need. Then define your service offering. Not the other way round.

Why the name BluMango? What’s the story behind it?

I wanted a name that stood out. Not something generic like “Creative Studio” or “XYZ Marketing.” I needed something short, bold, and easy to remember. Around that time, we were about to get a cat, and I already knew her name would be Mango. She had the right personality: independent, elegant, a bit cheeky. That spirit matched how I wanted the agency to feel.

But the name wasn’t random. I chose it with branding in mind. I asked myself: can this name turn into a strong icon? Can it work as a social media avatar, a logo, a visual identity? BluMango checked all the boxes. It’s distinctive, versatile, and you can picture it. That’s what a good brand name needs to do i.e., start a story before you say a word.

What makes BluMango different from other marketing agencies?

We don’t start with execution. We start with identity. If you don’t know who you are, no campaign will fix that. We dig deep into your tone, your values, and your business goals. Only then do we create. Everything we do is built on clarity, and that’s why it works.

We take the time to really understand your company: your values, your tone of voice, your internal culture, your DNA. Until we get that picture, we do not move. Because execution without strategy is just noise. And we’re not in the business of noise.

How do you define BluMango’s mission and values?

We bring clarity where there’s confusion. We say what needs to be said, even if it’s uncomfortable. We cut the nonsense, focus on results, and always treat marketing as a strategic tool – not decoration. Our values: honesty, focus, precision, and real respect for both clients and audience.

What kind of clients or industries do you feel BluMango is best suited for?

We work with companies in financial services, cybersecurity, education, tech, healthcare – you name it. But it’s never about the sector. It’s about the mindset. We work best with people who are ready to move, ready to make decisions, and ready to do the real work.

If your goal is to actually fix a problem, we’re here for it. If your goal is to look like you’re fixing a problem while doing the same thing you’ve done for 20 years, then we’re not the agency for you. We don’t do marketing theatre. We don’t play office. We work with people who want results, not just noise. And that connection? You feel it from the very first conversation.

As Managing Director, how would you describe your leadership style?

I’m fast, clear, and direct. I expect results, not excuses. I trust my team and give them space, but I also speak up when something’s off. There’s no bureaucracy, no drama, and no endless meetings. We move quickly, solve problems, and keep things real.

You’ve built a diverse, creative team. What do you look for when adding new talent to BluMango?

Chemistry. If the mindset is not right, I don’t care what’s on your CV. We look for people who take ownership, bring solutions, and don’t need hand-holding. No ego, no politics. Just smart, fast, reliable people who want to build something good. Skills can be taught, but you can’t teach values or impose your mindset on someone.

What role does Mango the cat really play in the agency?

She’s not just a cat. She’s the Head of Purrblic Relations and our Master Influencer officially. She’s also part of the reason the agency is called BluMango. As I had mentioned earlier, her personality matched everything I wanted the brand to stand for: confident, intuitive, elegant, and just the right amount of rebellious.

She joins strategy sessions by walking over keyboards, boosts morale with zoomies during deadlines, and knocks over coffee without apology. But beyond the jokes, Mango reminds us to stay creative, stay sharp, and not take ourselves too seriously. She keeps the team grounded, and definitely keeps the brand human.

Which services at BluMango are closest to your heart and why?

Social media management, especially LinkedIn, content creation, and website design – those are the ones I’m closest to. But the truth is, I’ve done all of it myself. Every single service BluMango offers, I’ve physically done with my own hands – writing, video creation and editing, podcast production, website design, graphic design, SEO, you name it. I’m not just managing projects from a distance. I’ve been in it.

And writing? That goes way back. I’ve been writing since I was a kid. Some of my stories were even published when I was younger, and now I’m writing a book. It’s not just a skill, it’s part of who I am. That’s why I care so much about how brands sound, not just how they look. Good writing moves people, builds trust, and drives action. And when you get that right, everything else in marketing starts to click.

How do you help clients move from chaos to clarity in their marketing?

Clarity starts with understanding. Always. We never jump into execution. First, we do a proper business analysis. It is not a surface-level chat, but a real deep dive into where the company stands, what’s working, what’s broken, and what needs to change. Only after that do we build a strategy that actually makes sense. Not a content calendar, not fluff, but a proper roadmap.

And let me be clear: if someone wants quick execution without strategy, we say no. That’s not how we work. If a client just wants an agency to “do stuff” without understanding the bigger picture, they need to find someone else. That’s fine. But we only work when we can understand the real needs, shape the right strategy, and build from there. Otherwise, it’s a waste of everyone’s time.

What common mistakes you see businesses make with their brand or marketing strategy?

Treating marketing like a cost. Or worse, like a content machine that just spits out posts. And in many companies, marketing is still seen as a support role i.e., something that helps sales, instead of leading the way. That mindset is not just outdated, it’s blocking growth. Marketing leads. If your brand, content, and positioning aren’t aligned, your sales team doesn’t stand a chance.

I started my career in solution sales, selling software to higher education institutions in North America. Later, I moved on to CRM, billing, and loyalty & rewards solutions for sectors like banking, telecom, and energy – highly complex systems with long sales cycles. So I know exactly what sales is all about. Been there. Done that. But if you put me in that same job today and told me sales should be leading the effort and marketing should be executing, I’d say: are you serious? That is simply not how it works anymore, whether you like it or not.

Thinking the market should follow you. This is another common mistake. It’s not your job as a company to tell people what they need. The market tells you what it wants. Your role is to listen, understand, and respond. Anything else is ego, and ego doesn’t convert.

How do you measure success—not just in business, but for your clients?

Success means long-term impact and consistency. At BluMango, we don’t aim for one-off wins or surface-level engagement. We measure success by the clients who stay with us, because the work actually delivers and evolves with them over time.

And we’re always upfront: if you think marketing should deliver instant results, we’re not the right fit. That’s not how it works. A viral post might get attention for a day, then it’s gone. Real success takes time. I’ve seen it myself. I once spent nearly a year of continuous marketing effort with zero visible results. Then it took off. Leads started coming in consistently, and it kept going, even when fuel ran out, for years after. That’s what proper marketing does. It builds something that lasts.

What does the future of BluMango look like? Are there new directions or services you’re excited about?

We’re keeping BluMango a lean and mean marketing machine. We’re not chasing scale for the sake of it. I have zero interest in building some bloated agency where I sit back managing a team of a hundred people and lose touch with the work. That’s not me. I stay on the ground with the team, making sure we deliver what matters.

AI is becoming a big part of how we work, but with control and purpose. We use it where it makes sense, to work smarter, not just faster.

We’ve also launched something that’s growing fast: Exclusive Social Media Management for Public Figures: athletes, artists, executives i.e., people who need strategy, discretion, and a strong digital presence. It’s picking up because it’s needed. And like everything else we do, it’s shaped by what clients actually need, not what we feel like selling.
